How often should a pool filter be cleaned?

Clean the filter when pressure rises meaningfully above its clean starting reading, not on a fixed date. On a Florida pool that usually means a deep clean a few times a year, more often during pollen season, after storms, and while recovering from algae.

Note the gauge reading right after a clean. That is your baseline. A steady climb above it means flow is restricted and the filter is due.

Signs you waited too long

  • Weak return jets and lazy surface flow
  • Cloudy water even with correct chlorine
  • Cleaner losing suction
  • Pump straining or running hotter than usual

A clogged filter forces the pump to work against resistance, which shortens motor life. It is one of the cheapest pieces of maintenance to stay on top of.
