Is pool leak detection different from home water leak detection?
Pool leak detection is a dedicated process focused on the pool shell, its dedicated plumbing lines, and the equipment pad, using pressure testing, dye testing and electronic listening built for that closed-loop system. General water leak detection instead targets a building's supply and drain lines, which run through entirely different plumbing and use different tools.
Pools run their own separate plumbing loop between the shell, skimmer, returns, pump and filter. That loop behaves nothing like the supply and drain lines running through a structure, so the diagnostic approach is different from the ground up.
Where pool leak detection focuses
- Skimmer throat, return fittings and light niche conduit
- Suction and return plumbing lines run to the pad
- Structural cracks in the shell, plaster or pebble surface
- Salt cell and heater connections at the equipment pad
Why pool-specific testing matters
A bucket test separates true water loss from normal evaporation, something that only applies to an open body of water like a pool. Pressure testing then isolates each pool line individually, and dye testing pinpoints the exact fitting or crack, none of which maps onto a structure's supply plumbing.
If a property is losing water and the source is not obvious, checking the pool loop first with pool-specific testing is the faster and more accurate path, since the pool has its own closed circulation system that can be isolated and tested on its own.
