How often should a pool be cleaned in Florida?
A Florida pool should be cleaned and chemically balanced once a week, every week of the year. Heat, intense UV, pollen and afternoon storms burn off sanitizer within days, so a two-week gap is usually long enough for algae to establish, especially between May and October.
Pool care advice written for northern states assumes a closed pool for half the year. On the Space Coast nothing closes. Water stays warm enough for algae to grow in January, and the barrier island adds salt spray and constant humidity on top of that.
What a weekly visit actually covers
- Skim the surface and brush the waterline, steps and benches
- Vacuum settled debris off the floor
- Empty skimmer and pump baskets
- Check filter pressure and backwash when it climbs
- Test and correct chlorine, pH, alkalinity, stabilizer and salt
When once a week is not enough
- Heavy oak, pine or palm canopy over the pool during spring pollen
- The days right after a tropical system passes through
- A pool under screen repair or nearby construction
- Vacation rentals with back-to-back guests in summer
Every-other-week service saves a little money and usually costs more in the end, because recovering a green pool is far more expensive than preventing one. If budget is the concern, a weekly chemical-only visit with owner-handled brushing is a better compromise than stretching the interval.
