How do I lower pH in a pool?
Lower pH with muriatic acid or dry acid, added slowly with the pump running and never poured near a skimmer or a metal fitting. Retest after a full turnover rather than adding again straight away. Check total alkalinity at the same time — alkalinity is usually what keeps dragging pH back up.

What high pH actually does
Above the ideal range, chlorine loses much of its working strength, so a pool can test with adequate chlorine and still grow algae. High pH also drives scale onto tile, heater elements, and salt cell plates, which is the expensive part.
Doing it safely
- Add acid with the pump running, in a slow stream over a deep return area
- Never mix acid with chlorine products or add both at the same spot
- Wait a full turnover before retesting, then adjust again if needed
- Correct alkalinity first if it is well above range, or pH will not hold
