Cyanuric Acid Too High? What It Means for Florida Pools

Stabilizer protects chlorine from the sun until there is too much of it, and then it locks chlorine up entirely. This is the reading most owners never check.

Cyanuric acid that is too high stops chlorine from working, and the only reliable fix is diluting the water. Stabilizer shields chlorine from ultraviolet light, which a Florida pool genuinely needs — without it, a Satellite Beach pool can lose most of its free chlorine in an afternoon. Past roughly 50 to 80 ppm, though, that same shield holds chlorine so tightly that it stops sanitizing.

What is cyanuric acid?

Cyanuric acid, often sold as stabilizer or conditioner, is a compound that binds loosely to chlorine and protects it from UV degradation. It is also built into stabilized chlorine products — trichlor tablets and dichlor shock — which is exactly how most pools end up with too much of it.

Why does cyanuric acid creep up?

Every trichlor tablet you drop in the floater adds stabilizer along with the chlorine, and stabilizer does not evaporate or break down meaningfully. It leaves only with water — splash-out, backwashing, or draining. A pool run on tablets year-round in Florida will drift high within a couple of seasons.

What does chlorine lock look like?

Classic signs: free chlorine tests fine but the pool still grows algae, the water is slightly dull, shock has no lasting effect, and the walls feel slick even after a scrub. Owners usually respond by adding more chlorine, which adds more stabilizer if the source is tablets, which deepens the problem.

A pool that tests three parts per million of chlorine and still grows algae is telling you to check the stabilizer.

How do you lower cyanuric acid?

By replacing water. There is no practical chemical that removes it from a residential pool, so you drain a portion and refill with fresh water. Because our water table is high, that has to be done carefully — a pool drained too far can shift or crack, and a partial drain is almost always the right answer.

  2. 02Calculate the portion to replace: dropping the level by half means replacing about half the water.
  3. 03Drain in stages rather than emptying the pool, keeping the water above the shallow-end floor.

  • Switch routine chlorination to liquid chlorine or a salt system, which add no stabilizer
  • Reserve trichlor tablets for vacations or short-term use
  • Use cal-hypo shock rather than dichlor when you need a boost
  • Test cyanuric acid quarterly, not just chlorine and pH
  • Keep pH in range so the chlorine you do have works at full strength
