Pool Pump Not Priming? Causes and Fixes for Florida Pools

A pool pump that will not prime is almost always pulling air or starved of water: low pool level, a full basket, a bad lid o-ring, a suction leak or a broken impeller.

A pool pump not priming means the pump cannot fill its housing with water and push it through the filter, so it spins on air. In most cases the cause is on the suction side: the pool level is below the skimmer, a basket or line is clogged, or air is leaking in at the lid, a union or a valve. Work through those in order before you assume the pump itself has failed.

Quick answer: Turn the pump off, top up the pool to mid-skimmer, empty the skimmer and pump baskets, check the pump lid o-ring, then fill the pump pot with water and restart. If it still will not catch prime within a few minutes, stop and look for a suction-side air leak or a broken impeller. What does it mean when a pool pump won't prime?

Priming is the moment the pump housing fills completely with water so the impeller can move it. The impeller is the spinning disc inside the pump that creates suction. A pump can only push water, it cannot pull a column of air, so anything that lets air in or keeps water out stops it from priming.

You will usually see the clear strainer lid stay half empty, hear the pump running louder than normal, and get little or no flow at the return jets. Hayward, one of the major pump makers, lists the same short set of causes in its pump priming troubleshooting notes: a suction-side air leak, a blocked suction line, a broken impeller, and pumps installed far from or above the pool that simply take longer to prime.

Low water level

If the water drops below the middle of the skimmer opening, the skimmer sucks air with every wave. Summer evaporation on the Space Coast runs about 1/4 inch a day, so a pool left a week without topping up can get there. If you are losing more than 1/2 inch a day, that usually means a leak, and our guide on how to tell if your pool is leaking walks through the bucket test.

Clogged baskets and lines

A full skimmer basket or pump basket starves the pump of water, which looks exactly like an air problem. Oak leaves, palm debris and spring pollen all do it. A blocked suction line, often a small toy, a lizard or a pine cone wedged past the skimmer, does the same and is harder to find.

Air leaks on the suction side

Any opening between the pool and the pump impeller can pull air in: the pump lid, the lid o-ring, the drain plugs on the pump pot, the unions on either side of the pump, and the valves on the suction lines. A leak here rarely drips water because the pipe is under suction, so look for bubbles in the lid instead. Hayward's pump FAQ points to the same suction-side leaks when air bubbles come out of the return jets.

A broken or clogged impeller

If the motor spins but the pump moves no water at all, even with a full pot, the impeller may be packed with debris or have broken free of the motor shaft. That is a repair that needs the pump opened up, not a priming problem you can fix from the deck.

How to prime a pool pump step by step

Most pumps will catch prime with this routine. Do it with the power off at the switch or breaker, not just paused on a timer.

  1. 01Turn the pump off at the breaker or the automation panel.
  2. 02Top the pool up so the water sits at the middle of the skimmer opening.
  3. 03Empty the skimmer basket and the pump basket and rinse the pump lid o-ring.
  4. 04Inspect the o-ring for cracks or flat spots and replace it if it is worn, then seat the lid evenly.
  5. 05Open the air relief valve on top of the filter.
  6. 06Fill the pump pot to the top with a garden hose, then close the lid.
  7. 07Turn the pump on and watch the lid. Close the filter air relief once a steady stream of water comes out.
  8. 08If the pot has not filled within three to five minutes, turn it off. Running a dry pump damages the shaft seal.

On a variable-speed pump, run the priming cycle at a high speed for the first few minutes, then drop back to your normal schedule. Our guide to how long to run a pool pump in Florida covers the everyday settings.

Why does my pool pump keep losing prime?

A pump that primes fine and then loses it again an hour or a day later almost always has a small air leak, not a dead motor. The usual culprits are a lid o-ring that has dried out in the Florida sun, a loose union nut, a cracked threaded fitting at the pump inlet, or a valve stem o-ring on a suction valve.

Salt air on the barrier island also corrodes fittings and hardware on equipment pads faster than inland, so pumps in Satellite Beach, Indialantic and Cocoa Beach tend to develop these leaks sooner. Typical pump life on our site is 8 to 12 years inland and 6 to 10 years within a mile of the ocean. If yours is near the end of that range and keeps losing prime alongside other symptoms, read our list of signs your pool pump is failing.

When to stop and call a pool technician

Call for help if the pump will not prime after a careful attempt, if it keeps losing prime within a day, if you see water dripping between the pump and motor, or if the motor hums, overheats or trips the breaker. Do not keep restarting a pump that runs dry, because a burned shaft seal turns a small fix into a bigger one.

Pearlin Pools' pump and motor repair starts with an on-site diagnosis of electrical draw, prime and pressure. Repairs cover shaft seals, impellers, bearings, capacitors, motors, unions, valves and suction plumbing. When replacement makes more sense, equipment installation covers variable-speed pumps and programming. For what drives the cost of a repair visit, see the pool service cost guide.

A pool left without circulation in summer heat can start to turn, so if the water is already cloudy or green when the pump comes back, sort the chemistry at the same time.

Quick answers

Pool Pump Not Priming? Causes and Fixes for Florida Pools FAQs

How long should it take a pool pump to prime?

+

Most pumps installed close to the pool catch prime within a couple of minutes once the pot is full. Pumps set far from the pool or above water level take longer. If the pot is still not full after three to five minutes, turn the pump off and look for an air leak or a blockage.

Can I run my pool pump without it being primed?

+

No. A pump running without water has nothing to cool and lubricate the shaft seal, so the seal can overheat and start leaking. Turn it off, fix the cause, refill the pump pot and try again rather than letting it run dry.

Does a new pump lid o-ring fix a pump that won't prime?

+

Often it does, because a dry, cracked or flattened lid o-ring is one of the most common air leaks. If bubbles still show in the lid after a new o-ring, the leak is further along the suction side, such as at a union, a valve or a threaded fitting.

Is a pump that won't prime covered by weekly pool service?

+

Weekly pool cleaning from Pearlin Pools includes emptying the skimmer and pump baskets and checking filter pressure, which prevents many priming problems. Air leaks, seals and impellers are handled as a separate pump and motor repair.
